FIDE Master Soumya Ranjan Mishra emerged champion in the Syed Umar Ali Memorial 3rd Kendrapara Open Chess Tournament, scoring eight out of a possible nine at Urdu Library, Community Center, Kendrapara today. He received a cash prize of Rs 16,000.
Sidhant Mohapatra and Smaraki Mohanty finished first and second runner-up with eight and 7.5 points respectively. The former pocketed Rs 10,000, while the latter became richer Rs 8,000. As many as 159 players from 15 District and two institutions participated in the tournament, which was organised by Kendrapara District Chess Association (KDCA), under the aegis of All Odisha Chess Association (AOCA).
BIPL Managing Director Benazir Bibi handed over the prizes at the closing ceremony. Social worker Sayeda Saira Anjum, KDCA secretary Bhabesh Mohanty and international arbiter Suresh Chandra Sahoo were present on the occasion. The three-day tournament, which carried a total prize fund of Rs 1 lakh, was earlier inaugurated by Kendrapara Municipality Executive Officer Deba Prasad Bal.
